Fort William via Great Glen Way

Following the marked way route of the Great glen way this 5.4km walk takes you into the centre of Fort William. Options for getting back include re-tracing your steps, taking Shiel bus No47 from Middle Street or the train from Fort William station.

  1. Leave the marina, cross the canal at the sea lock gates and follow the path up the canal, you will see a footpath off to the right that drops down to the shorefront, and is signposted for Caol/Fort William. Take that path.
  2. Continue along the shorefront pathway along Caol beach, at the end of the pathway turn left and follow the road to the end of Glenmallie Road, cross Kilmallie Road and turn right, follow the footpath along the road around the left hand bend, then cross the road to take the footpath alongside the River Lochy.
  3. You will reach Soldier’s Bridge (footbridge over the river) and cross at this point. This is next to the rail bridge and if you time your walk correctly you may get to see the Jacobite Train crossing the bridge with the backdrop of Ben Nevis behind. You can do a slight detour hear to view old Inverlochy Castle, this can be visited as can the neighbouring Highland Soap Factory which has a great giftshop and café. Otherwise once you cross the bridge continue straight ahead along Black Parks Road.
  4. You will almost immediately cross a small river (tail-race from the hydroelectric power plant), immediately after that turn right and go through the gate and follow the path through the field and along the bank of the river. Keep on following the path as far as you can until you come out onto a small road by turning right, which immediately crossed the Nevis River.
  5. At the end of the road turn right and then almost immediately left and go around the back of the Shinty pitch and Premier Inn hotel, this will come out at Morrison’s Supermarket.
  6. Go through Morrison’s car park and at the Railway Station take the underpass, this will come out at The Parade at the bottom of Fort William High Street.
